Dance for Seniors

PHSC2_web

The dance class begins with participants seated in chairs. The warm-up sequence is based on a series of exercises inspired by Anne Green Gilbert’s Brain Dance, yoga and modern dance techniques. After warm-up participants stand using chairs as balance supports for simple leg exercises, ballet barre work and balancing. Without chairs, the class practices cultural, jazz, ballroom, Latin American and partner dances. Students with physical limitations may participate by sitting in the chairs to perform these dances. The class ends with stretches using a wall or chair for support, breathing techniques, chair yoga and reflections on how the body responds to the class. Classes have been held at Prospect Hill Senior Services Center, St. Louis Senior Center, Park Slope Senior Center, and Krakus Senior Center. Call for current class information: 917-756-8242.
